The Allies controlled the West: the American zone was the Southern area (Bayern, Baden-Württemberg, Hessen), the British controlled the North (Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein), and the French occupied the Western states that bordered France. West Berlin was under the control of the three Western Allies (US, Britain and France).

7. | What was the Berlin Luftbrücke? |
| The Berlin air lift -- in 1948, the Soviets blockaded all the roads leading into West Berlin, cutting the city off from all means of support (food, medicine, etc.). American (and some British) planes launched an around-the-clock series of takeoffs and landings to Berlin, carrying needed goods to supply the city. The airlift lasted 11 months; at its peak, 32 planes were in the air at all times travelling back and forth, and a plane was taking off and landing every 90 seconds. This forced the Soviets to recognize that the West would not give up on the city of Berlin, and the East backed down their blockade.
