Arbeitsblatt: Passiv mit Modalverben(Antworten)

A. Passivformeln. The easiest way to remember the passive constructions is just to memorize the patterns for the different tenses using a very simple verb like ‘machen’. Provide the German passive equivalents of the English sentences below, and try to memorize these as formulas for your future work.

Präsens:  It is being done.             Es wird gemacht.
Präteritum:  It was done.  ___________________________________________
Perfekt:  It has been done.  ___________________________________________
Präsens mit Modalverb:  It must be done.  ___________________________________________
Präteritum mit Modalverb:  It had to be done.  ___________________________________________

B. Was muss gemacht werden? Your parents are coming for a visit tomorrow, and many things have to be done before then. Write sentences in the present passive using the modal verb müssen. Then write one sentence of your own.

BEISPIEL:   Hemden - waschen             Die Hemden müssen noch gewaschen werden.

1.Wohnzimmer - aufräumen
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

2.Tisch - decken
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

3.Zeitungen - wegwerfen (participle = weggeworfen)
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

4.Schuhe - putzen
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

5.Bett - machen
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

6.?
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

C. Meine Wohnung ist schmutzig! There are still many more things to do before your parents arrive. For these sentences, take the active German sentence and make it passive. Change the modal verb to match the original active sentence (müssen, sollen, können, etc.)

BEISPIEL:   Ich muss die Küche sauber machen.             Die Küche muss sauber gemacht werden.

1.Ich muss das Badezimmer putzen.
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

2.Ich soll eine Tür reparieren.
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

3.Ich kann neue Vorhänge (=curtains) kaufen.
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

4.Ich soll den Teppich waschen.
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

5.Ich könnte die Wände neu streichen (=gestrichen).
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

D. Bei euch ist viel verboten. Many things should not (cannot, must not) be done in certain places. Express the following ideas using the impersonal passive with modal verbs -- you can choose whatever modal verb seems appropriate.

BEISPIEL:   In der Bibliothek - nicht sprechen             In der Bibliothek darf nicht gesprochen werden.

1.Im Kino - nicht rauchen
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

2.In diesem Fluss - nicht schwimmen
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

3.Auf dem Fußballplatz - kein Bier trinken
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

4.Auf diesem Platz - nicht parken
 ___________________________________________________________________________________________

E. Alles im Passiv. As review, translate each sentence into German, paying attention to the way the verb ‘werden’ changes to accommodate the tense or helping verb.

4.Is the old woman being helped?  ____________________________________________________
Has the old woman been helped?  ____________________________________________________
