Schreibprojekt Nr 5

Your fifth writing project will be, I hope, fun to write, because I’d like you to be a little creative and write a fictional ‘love story’. It doesn’t have to be a sappy, romantic kind of love story; you should feel free to write a soap opera, an ironic or sarcastic story, a happy-ending romance, or any kind of love story you’d like. The main idea is that you practice using some of the ‘friendship and love’ vocabulary that we covered in class, and that you write primarily in the past tense (sie haben geheiratet, sie hat ihn geküsst, etc.). If you don’t have any creative spark for telling a love story, you can re-tell a famous story from a book or movie (e.g. Pretty Woman, The Princess Bride) in your own words. (Beware of vocabulary if you choose to re-tell a famous story: keep it simple and don’t try to explain all of the minor points!)

Since your story is only about a paragraph long, you’ll need to be sketchy in the details, but feel free to expand on any areas you find particularly interesting or noteworthy. Below I’ve listed a few questions you should cover, although you don’t need to answer every single question here, and you should feel free to tell the story in your own way; these are just ideas to get you started.

Wo oder wie haben sie einander getroffen (=meet)?

Wer hat wen angesprochen? Wer hat zuerst geflirtet?

Was haben sie zusammen gemacht?

Sind sie zusammen eingezogen, haben sie sich verlobt oder haben sie geheiratet?

Wie hat die Geschichte geendet? Haben sie glücklich zusammen gelebt, oder haben sie sich getrennt?

I think you’ll find that it’s quite easy to add a lot of detail to a story like this, so as you write, feel free to go over the suggested word count if you have more things you want to say. Below is an example of what I might write for this assignment, although I’m not all that creative! (The following paragraph is nearly 200 words! You don’t need to be this detailed in your writing!)

Am Samstag Abend ist Günther in die Kneipe gegangen. Er hat den ganzen Tag bei McDonald’s gearbeitet, und er war müde. Er hat ein Bier bestellt, und dann hat er sie gesehen. Sie war blond, nicht sehr schön, und nicht sehr jung, aber er hat sie attraktiv gefunden. Er hat sie angesprochen: »Möchten Sie ein Bier mit mir trinken?« Sie hat ja gesagt, und sie haben zusammen diskutiert und getrunken. Ihr Name war Helga. Später am Abend sind sie ins Kino gegangen, und dann hat Günther sie nach Hause gebracht. Am nächsten Tag hat er sie angerufen, und sie haben lange gesprochen. In den folgenden Tagen haben sie vieles zusammen gemacht: sie sind in die Disko gegangen, sie haben zu Hause ferngesehen, und sie haben sehr viel Bier getrunken. Nach einem Monat hat Günther sie dann gefragt: »Willst du mit mir einziehen?« Sie hat eine Weile gedacht, und dann hat sie nein gesagt. Sie hat gesagt: »Du bist sehr nett, aber ich will frei sein. Es ist aus.« Günther ist total traurig gewesen. Er hat geweint und hat noch mehr Bier getrunken. Dann ist er wieder in die Kneipe gegangen. Er hat eine andere Frau gesehen, und er hat sie angesprochen ...

You may want to re-read the Anlauftext (comic strip) at the beginning of Kapitel 5 for additional ideas on phrasing things, and certainly look back over the ‘friendship and love’ vocabulary on p. 200-201. In addition, here are some phrases that you may find useful in your writing. As always, if you can’t figure out how to say something vital to your story, please ask me! I’m happy to help.

Like the previous assignments, this should be typed: please DOUBLE-SPACE your paragraph so that I have room for corrections. It should be approximately 70 words in length. As always, feel free to write more than that if you want to, although there’s no extra credit for longer work.

Grading criteria: clearly, vocabulary is very important to this assignment, so try to use what we’ve learned, along with any additional things you look up. The other major element is the Perfekt tense, so please double-check your verb forms, both the participles (ge-forms) and the helping verbs (haben or sein). Finally, because you’ll probably be using a lot of time elements (the next day, etc.), pay attention to word order: verb second, unless there’s a conjunction (dass/weil/ob) that moves the verb to the end. As always, spelling is important, so do proofread your work carefully, and be careful of typos! Viel Glück und viel Spaß!
